Old mummy had diabetes

VIENNA -- Hibernatus, the 5300-year-old mummified body dug up from a central European glacier seven years ago, probably died of a stroke or heart attack, a symposium here was told.

According to various theories explored yesterday at the forum on the origins of humanity, he was aged between 43 and 53 and died either of a heart attack or a stroke.

He also had diabetes, judging from the narrowness of his carotid artery.

Earlier theories were that Oetzi, the man dubbed Hibernatus, died of cold or exhaustion. -- Sapa
